MSAGALI, Tanzania (AP) - What started as a slow roll backward for a passenger train crossing central Tanzania accelerated into a screaming, 25-minute runaway ride that ended when it crashed into a lumbering freight train at about 125 mph, survivors and officials said Tuesday.
Rescue workers walk amongst the debris of a train crash in Igandu village, Tuesday, June 25, 2002. Railway officials said the train was climbing a steep hill when it experienced mechanical problems and rolled backwards, smashing into an approaching cargo train. As many as 1,000 may have been on the train when the accident occured in Igandu village near Mpwapwa, 45 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Dodoma. (AP Photo/Sayyid Azim)
