Train Derails Near Baltimore Ballpark
A CSX train carrying hazardous materials including hydrochloric acid
derailed and caught fire yesterday in a tunnel in downtown Baltimore, postponing
the second game of a doubleheader between the Texas Rangers and the Orioles
at Camden Yards. The stadium was evacuated.
Firefighters
waited for hours Wednesday at one end of a tunnel in downtown Baltimore
because the chemical fire was too hot to fight. "We tried to get firefighters
inside, but the entry was very limited," said fire department spokesman
Hector Torres.
 New
York Times, July 24 2001:
Tunnel in Baltimore is Cleared of Train
Five days after a freight train derailed and caught fire in a Baltimore
tunnel, crews pulled out the last smoldering boxcar. Firefighters had battled
the blaze since Wednesday afternoon, when it began on a CSX train 60 feet
underground in the 1.7-mile-long tunnel. The fire, billowing thick black
smoke, snarled traffic and closed major roads and forced the cancellation
of three Orioles games. The derailment of the train, which was carrying
hazardous chemicals, wood and paper, is under investigation. Attention
has now turned to testing the structural soundess of the tunnel. Because
of saftety concerns, part of Howard Street, a main thoroughfare above the
tunnel, remained closed.
